The actuarial profession is difficult to capture in a single definition. Actuaries work across different industries and roles, but one element connects much of their work: understanding risk and helping others make better-informed decisions.
As Cillian Browne, a young actuary from Ireland, points out, actuarial work exists on a spectrum. Quantitative methods and technical expertise are important tools for analysing and measuring risk, but the role does not end with the numbers. Just as important is translating those results into insights that help companies and decision-makers understand the risks they are taking.
At the same time, the profession itself is not always well understood outside the actuarial community. Marlene Peck, a young actuary from Austria, highlights the importance of making actuarial work more visible and helping more people understand what actuaries actually do.
This creates an opportunity for the profession: to communicate its value more clearly and show how broad and relevant actuarial work can be. From analysing uncertainty to supporting strategic decisions, actuaries contribute far beyond traditional perceptions of the profession.
Making that contribution more visible can also help a new generation discover just how diverse an actuarial career can be.
