The actuarial profession may differ from country to country, but many of its challenges, skills and opportunities are shared. Connecting across borders can therefore offer much more than networking: it can create new ideas, new perspectives and new ways of approaching familiar problems.
Darshan Purmessur, a young actuary from Mauritius, emphasizes the value of sharing knowledge and insights with actuaries from other countries. Learning how others approach similar work can inspire ideas that can be adapted locally – or developed further together internationally.
For Kea Schoder, a young actuary from Germany, young actuaries have an important role to play in this exchange. A new generation can bring fresh perspectives to international collaboration and leadership, while creating stronger connections across the profession.
Leadership itself is also not limited to one particular market or area of actuarial work. As Katy An, a young actuary from Great Britain, observes, many leadership principles are surprisingly universal. Skills learned in one context can often be transferred to another, making leadership an important part of professional development at every stage of an actuarial career.
International exchange creates space to learn from differences while also recognising what actuaries have in common. And that combination can be a powerful source of both personal and professional growth.
